The Trail you blazed....

"The trail you've blazed all week has led you here; Welcome to the weekend!"

I just read this quote of a Facebook page I follow and realized how fitting it was. It is Saturday morning and as I sit drinking coffee, christmas tree lit up, dogs laying at my feet, one kiddo sleeping still and the other on a donut run with Dad, I realized I should be proud of the trail I blazed this week.

This last week was a whirlwind. Ups and downs both in our career, school and marriage. Probably a typical week, but I feel inclined to share why, in my heart, I can enjoy this weekend. In school we are coming to the end of our trimester which means classes are coming to an end, finals are around the corner and panic has blanketed the clinic where senior interns are ready to graduate in a week, and where us junior interns are trying to get our required number of adjustments, physicals and X-ray credits.
Over the course of this last week I gained a couple more patients in our outpatient clinic. Look out-Im at a total of 20 patients haha! All of them range in age from 4 months old to 80 years old! This week I felt very accomplished with organizing my patient files, and confident in my adjusting. One day I had a total of 5 patient visits, 4 of which were all pediatric patients! They are my favorite. I bring a bag of toys and stickers for them to play with while I question mom on their health and daily activities. It seemed a cold or flu had been going around with a lot of patients this week, so I brought clementines to 3 of my kiddo patients and once they got adjusted, they got an extra boost of Vitamin C! They loved it and so did their mom! Overall, I felt extremely happy and know my passion is in the right place while I am treating all of my patients! One step at a time.
This week C and I also launched our Life Aligned Facebook page and uploaded our very first podcast interview. I felt very vulnerable to have people listen to us over social media, however I know it is a step in the right direction to us building a tribe of healthy, happy couples and business owners. We hope all of our followers enjoy the upcoming posts and podcasts as we slowly but surely gain a bigger tribe!
Finally, to end the week, C had a scholarship awards banquet Friday night in which he applied for a foundation scholarship from the school, and for the 4th year in a row, he was awarded one! Thank the Lord! Every little bit helps, especially with the holidays coming up! I picked up the bonus kids for the weekend and we have planned a relaxing and fun filled family weekend!

I feel as though "blazing a trail" should be something we look forward to doing in all aspects of life. For me I want to blaze a trail for my family and home life; for my patients and their quality of life; and for my marriage.
How have you all blazed a trail for your weekend? Or are you blazing a trail over the weekend for your week?

“Work until your mentors become your competition”

“Work until your mentors become your competition”

Well I have been slacking a lot lately in the writing department, between national boards, patients, school and the holidays it has been a struggle to stay focused.  I was listening to a podcast last night while driving home from the VA hospital where I was completing paperwork to participate in a clerkship there as a student chiropractor.

Side note here, in order to even attempt to keep up with podcasts I have to forgo the jams and use my driving time for something productive.  During the podcast the quote “work until your mentors become you competition” was mentioned.  This quote is a variation of “work until your idols become your rivals” from a song recorded by Drake.   It’s a pretty cool sounding quote but the struggle for me is how to take an inspirational quote and actually make it a reality.

So how do I work myself into a position that my mentors are my competition?

First what is the quality that makes a person a mentor?  I believe they are primarily leaders, they have to possess a quality that makes people desire to follow and emulate them.  If you want to compete with them you must inspire other people to follow you.  So how do you become a leader while you are still learning yourself?

I have also been thinking about some other quotes recently “you can judge a man by the company he keeps” and “if you want to go fast go alone, if you want to go far go together.”  Many of the people I look up to have gotten where they are by surrounding themselves with people who are working towards the same goals.  By being the catalyst of the group succeeding they were able to become a leader that others would follow.

So my challenge to myself is to surround myself with like-minded people who are striving to reach similar goals.  Then focus on how to help them succeed in their goals and then learn and grow with them.  As we all reach our goals together we will become the next generation of mentors.
